The Lake District

We spent the day exploring the lakes and roads between Penrith and Ravenglass on the west coast, where we'd arranged to meet Hazel. The weather was showery as we set off along Ullswater and then through Kirkstone Pass. It didn't deter the hordes of hikers and bikers along the way but we enjoyed the scenery from the comfort of our rental car. After a quick look around Bowness on Windermere, Beatrix Potter country, we escaped the milling tourists and set off for Conniston. We went into a pub there, ordered lunch, used the toilets and Ruth's beer had just been poured when they decided the fire alarm that had been going for at least 5 minutes should be taken notice of and we all evacuated the building. After at least another 10 minutes, we gave up and went to a rather seedy cafe - all up it took 1.5 hours to have lunch. So we wasted no time in going on to the guest house where we were to meet Hazel. She was out househunting when we arrived but eventually we met up and went for a walk on the beach with her 3 golden retrievers and son, Charlie, before having a drink in a hotel and coming back to the guest house for dinner. It was lovely to catch up with her and we spent the time reminiscing about our families. We may also see her when we're in Snowdonia.

Stone walls are everywhere - like fences and hedges in NZ

There's no shortage of rocks for the walls but we wouldn't like to be the builders
